Nigel Slater Driving Instruction

Teaching safe driving for life

The first step to become a driving Instructor is to register with the DVSA (Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency).

You must be over 21 years old and have held a driving licence for over three years, without holding any motoring convictions.

You must also get a criminal record check if you’re applying to become an approved driving instructor (ADI) for the first time.

You cannot use one you have already - you must get a new one.

What does the training involve?

The DVSA ADI Examination process to become a Driving Instructor, is in 3 parts:

The theory test

This includes multiple choice questions and a hazard perception test. Once you've passed the theory test, you must pass the other parts of the test within 2 years or you'll have to start the whole process again.

The driving ability test

There are 5 parts to the approved driving instructor (ADI) part 2 test: An eyesight check, ‘show me, tell me’ vehicle safety questions, general driving ability, manoeuvres and independent driving

The instructional ability test

A DVSA examiner will watch you give a client-centred driving lesson lasting about 45 minutes to one of your pupils andwill look for evidence that you meet the national standard for driver and rider training.
